Gum disease is a common name for periodontal disease. This condition is caused by many factors such as bacterial plaque accumulation, smoking, genetic factors, diabetes among others. Periodontal disease can go from a simple and mild form of gum inflammation known as gingivitis to a more severe periodontal condition where there is bone destruction and possibly tooth loss.  Periodontal maintenance is a cleaning procedure performed to carefully clean the teeth. The main aim of the periodontal maintenance is to prevent or minimize the reoccurrence and progression of the periodontal disease in patients that have been periodontally treated.It also helps in the prevention of tooth loss and the detection and timely treatment of other oral conditions.
